Task steps, hazards and controls
Swipe or step through on mobile
| Step | Hazards | Controls |
|---|---|---|
| Check building information before disturbing material | Unknown asbestos containing material in linings, textured coatings, soffits, sheet cladding and vinyl; lead based paint | Confirm property/building age, confirm whether asbestos information has been supplied, review the asbestos register or survey where applicable, treat pre-2000 buildings as potentially containing ACM and pre-1980 coatings as potentially lead |
| Inspect the specific work location | Hidden layers, previous repairs, damaged sheet material | Visually inspect before drilling, cutting, sanding or scraping; where the material cannot be positively identified, treat it as suspect and do not disturb it |
| Suspect material encountered — STOP | Fibre or dust release, exposure of workers and occupants, contamination of the property | Stop the affected work immediately, do not disturb further, leave the material in place, isolate and sign the area where required, keep occupants clear, do not clean up debris |
| Notify, assess and recommence | Uncontrolled recommencement, undocumented exposure | Notify the SCS supervisor and the Main Contractor immediately, obtain assessment / sampling or authoritative information, record the event, recommence only with written confirmation and agreed controls; notify WorkSafe where required |
Step 1 of 4
Check building information before disturbing material
Hazards
Unknown asbestos containing material in linings, textured coatings, soffits, sheet cladding and vinyl; lead based paint
Critical controls
Confirm property/building age, confirm whether asbestos information has been supplied, review the asbestos register or survey where applicable, treat pre-2000 buildings as potentially containing ACM and pre-1980 coatings as potentially lead
Critical controls
- Property information and asbestos information considered before any disturbance of material
- STOP immediately and do not disturb further if suspect or unidentified material is encountered
- Work does not recommence until assessment or information is obtained and controls agreed
Minimum PPE
Do not disturb — no PPE substitutes for stopping workP3 RPE and disposable coveralls only for controlled withdrawal
