| Step | Hazards | Controls |
|---|---|---|
| Identify the coating and substrate | Lead based paint, asbestos containing textured coatings or sheet linings, silica in plaster and render | Check property age and information, apply JSEA RM-15 for suspect material, treat pre-1980 paint as lead until assessed, escalate for testing |
| Set up containment and extraction | Dust migration to occupants and neighbours, contamination of belongings and ground | Sheet and seal the area, drop sheets to catch debris, H-class extraction connected and tested, ventilate away from occupants |
| Scrape, sand and feather | Respiratory exposure, eye injury, cuts, hand-arm vibration, awkward postures, working at height | P2/P3 RPE with fit check, goggles, sharp tools used away from the body, rotate tasks and tools, use platforms not ladders for sustained work |
| Clean down and dispose | Spread of dust and debris, waste handling, contaminated PPE | HEPA vacuum all surfaces, wrap and bag debris, dispose per waste requirements, remove coveralls before leaving the area, wash hands and face |

Identify the coating and substrate
Hazards
Lead based paint, asbestos containing textured coatings or sheet linings, silica in plaster and render
Critical controls
Check property age and information, apply JSEA RM-15 for suspect material, treat pre-1980 paint as lead until assessed, escalate for testing
Critical controls
- Dust captured at source — H-class on-tool extraction or wet methods, never dry uncontrolled sanding
- Pre-1980 coatings treated as potential lead paint until proven otherwise
- Containment and clean-down on completion with a HEPA vacuum
Minimum PPE
P2/P3 particulate RPE (clean shaven, fit checked)Eye protectionDisposable coverallsGlovesSafety footwear
